A little about me…

julia_austin_environmental_indoor_037

I started my career as an IT professional working as a consultant and operator in the healthcare industry. I got the startup bug in the late 1990s and have been there ever since. I have been in technology leadership roles during the early days of some of the most successful infrastructure companies of our day (Akamai, VMware, DigitalOcean), have invested in and advised hundreds of startups across just about every industry vertical, sit on boards and run a non-profit organization Good For Her to support founders who identify as women.

I was appointed to the faculty at Harvard Business School in 2016 and for many years I taught Product Management and was the faculty lead of Startup Bootcamp. During the 2020-21 academic year, I took a break from teaching to be an Executive Fellow in the Rock Center for Entrepreneurship while completing an intensive, nine-month, transformational coaching certification program. I was reappointed to the faculty in 2021 to launch a new course, Startup Operations, designed for student entrepreneurs as well as a Short Intensive Program (SIP), The Startup Toolkit.

Coaching entrepreneurs through their startup journeys brings me joy. There is nothing more energizing than helping people realize their dreams and allowing them step into their power. Read more about my coaching practice here.

  1. Hi Julia,
It was great meeting you yesterday. Thanks for the pep talk on visibility in the workplace.
Your talk about being pulled back to Boston really resonated with me. This new Pivotal Labs office is the latest thing that keeps me here–which I definitely have mixed feelings about–but we’re really building an amazing team!

While we have the great guidance of Pivotal Labs’ larger offices, most of our office is brand new to Boston. We’d benefit a lot by hearing about your experiences starting the VMware Boston site.
Any chance you’d be free for a lunch time talk?

We’re currently working out of the WeWork space in Boston across from South Station, as we patiently await our EMC space. We’d love to host you here in one of the large conference rooms and I can connect you with our site director directly if you have the bandwidth.

    Best,
    Larisa
